What is the PA Journal Club?

The Journal Club will be a recurring virtual event (through Zoom) where PAs come together to explore and discuss academic articles relevant to our profession. Sessions will feature curated journal articles on topics such as clinical practice, research, PA education, and interprofessional collaboration. Each session will offer opportunities for critical discussion, learning, and community building and be eligible for CPD credits.

For the first journal club, this will only be open to Practicing PAs that are PARSEC Members

What will the topic be?

Erin Unger will be presenting on the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. The specific article and critical appraisal form will be sent one week prior to the event to registered participants. You must register by Friday March 27th in order to be eligible to attend.

What are the goals of PA Journal Club?

  • Promote evidence-based practice: Strengthen clinical decision-making and patient care by equipping PAs with tools to critically appraise and apply current research.

  • Enhance critical thinking skills: Support PAs in developing the analytical and evaluative skills essential for both clinical reasoning and scholarly engagement.

  • Foster professional discussion and peer learning: Create a collegial environment for dialogue and knowledge exchange among practicing PAs.

  • Encourage reflective practice: Promote intentional reflection on how new knowledge can shape and improve clinical care.

  • Improve scholarly and presentation skills: Provide opportunities for PAs to lead discussions and engage with literature through structured, supported sessions.

Who can attend PA Journal Club?

Journal club is exclusive to members of PARSEC. If you are not a member of PARSEC, please register here: https://www.parsec.live/join to attend. For the inaugural event, this will only be available to Practicing PAs. Future events may include learners and other participants.

Do I have to present at PA Journal Club?

Yes. Journal Club is a shared professional initiative that relies on member participation. By attending, members acknowledge that they will be expected to present at a future session, either individually or as part of a small group. Presenters will receive guidance and structured support to ensure a positive and collaborative presentation experience. This shared responsibility model helps foster a strong professional community, enhances scholarly skills, and ensures the continued success and sustainability of the PA Journal Club.

How will I earn CPD credits?

To be eligible for CPD credits, attendees must contribute meaningfully to the session through engagement in discussion, questions, or shared reflections. This will be facilitated by completion of a pre-event article appraisal form that will support your review of the article. Journal Club is designed as an interactive, collaborative learning environment rather than a passive lecture format.  You must  have attended journal club, participated actively in discussion, and complete the post-journal club evaluation form in order to be eligible for these credits.

What CPD credits am I eligible to earn?

PARSEC's PA Journal Club is PACCC approved for 1.0 Section 1 - Group Learning (journal club) credits. In addition, you can claim Section 3 - Feedback Delivered credits for your participation in the completion of the evaluation form.

When it is your turn to present in journal club you are eligible for Section 2 - Activity Preparation credits (for time spent preparing to deliver your presentation) and Section 3 -Feedback Received credits for reviewing the post-club evaluation forms after your presentation.
