Session Overview

In this Virtual PA Shadowing session, you’'ll hear from Tara and Heather, two Canadian Physician Assistants practicing in Northern and rural Manitoba. They share what it’s like to deliver care in remote communities, where resources are limited but the need for timely, accessible healthcare is high. From managing acute concerns to supporting chronic disease and preventive care, their roles span the full scope of primary care practice.

Working in settings where physicians may not be readily available, Tara and Heather collaborate closely with nurses, community health workers and regio'nal health teams. They provide continuity of care, reduce barriers to access and help build trust within the communities they serve. If you’re curious about rural medicine, autonomous practice or contributing to health equity in underserved areas, this session offers a practical and meaningful look into what that work entails.

    Tara Clarke is a Physician Assistant and the Coordinator of the Manitoba First Nations COVID-19 Rapid Response Teams. A former paramedic, she transitioned to the PA profession after experiencing a life-altering diagnosis of acute Transverse Myelitis. Since graduating from the University of Manitoba’s MPAS program in 2013, she has built a career rooted in emergency medicine, serving in the Selkirk and Seven Oaks Emergency Departments for nearly a decade.

    Now a fly-in locum PA and Clinical Lead with Ongomiizwin Health Services and Natawiwenak Health, Tara works to expand PA involvement in northern and Indigenous communities across Manitoba. She leads recruitment, mentorship, and oversight of PA roles in remote settings, helping to strengthen care delivery and improve health equity. Outside of her clinical and leadership work, she balances a full family life as a mother of five, with two dogs, a cat, and a passion for running that continues to fuel her resilience and advocacy.

    Heather Wittick is a Physician Assistant with extensive experience delivering care in northern and remote communities in Manitoba. She served as a team lead with the COVID-19 Rapid Response Unit at Ongomiizwin Health Services, where she provided fly-in primary and emergency care to Garden Hill First Nation during the pandemic. Prior to this, she worked at the Thompson Clinic with the Northern Regional Health Authority, supporting frontline care in a high-needs region.

    Heather’s clinical background includes both acute and community-based practice, with a strong focus on health equity and Indigenous health. Her work has centered on addressing service gaps in remote areas, contributing to both direct patient care and broader health system responses.
